Copper Penny Craftsman

A beautiful 1920s Portland craftsman home needed some help transitioning from frumpy farm house style to its current funky and fabulous look!

The space was a long rectangle with two openings, one from the entry way and one from the kitchen. The openings inadvertently create three sections. The tricky part was creating three distinct zones, each with their own functionality and flavor, while making the room coherent as a whole.

We chose to bring the color palette to a rich dark green, inspired by the rich velvety colors of the 1920s, the house’s origin year. The typical craftsman architectural features of the wide window and door way trims and the bade boards, were painted in a pure white, to contrast and pop with the dark green.

The client wanted a creative and eclectic space, something kind of funky but elegant…. So we went with a dark green, black, white, creme and gold color palette. And an eclectic vibe with a mixture of mid-century and MCM inspired pieces, a few Japanese and Chinese antiques, some funky 70s inspired decor and lighting features, a few art deco design elements, and a couple of industrial pieces… the finished product is a fabulous, fun and funky room full of character and winks to the house’s past.

The room is comprised of a dining room, a living room/family room, a cocktail sipping zone…

The dining room features a Sputnik-inspired light fixture, a dizzy, black and white Johnathan Adler rug , and  a set of fabulous Arne Vodder ladder-back chairs from 1960s Sweden.

The family room features a massive brick fireplace that was painted white with a projector screen that was installed under the mantle (a more aesthetic solution than a tv over the mantle); another Johnathan Adler rug this time with an Art Deco inspired pattern; and a big cigar colored leather couch that contrasts beautifully with the dark green walls. And if you couldn’t tell, the client was a big fan of plants so we went nuts!

The third space is the cocktail sipping zone as we liked to call it… this space includes beautiful MCM-inspired chairs, a fun tiger rug again by Johnathan Adler, a gorgeous antique tea table and an arch lamp. This cozy spot requires some sort of cocktail / fancy drink.

The sourcing for this project was definitely the funnest part of this project with pieces gathered from all over the world. The space also has room to evolve, as the client is an avid collector of antiques and funky items!
